About the test
How this Japanese pronunciation test works
Read 5 words and 5 sentences aloud. Each recording is checked against the target sound and its most likely mistake.
Read 10 prompts
Random words and sentences, one recording each.
Compare two patterns
Your recording is matched against the target (切って) and the nearest mistake (来て), never against a transcript alone.
See your score and evidence
A 0–100 practice score with your waveform. Unclear recordings stay unscored.
What it checks
Five contrasts that change meaning:
Long vowels
Is the long vowel held for two beats? (おばさん / おばあさん)
Small っ
Is there a one-beat hold before the next consonant? (来て / 切って)
ん
Does ん get a beat of its own? (火事 / 漢字)
Contracted sounds
Is きゃ one beat rather than き・や? (客 / 規約)
Voicing
Is the consonant voiced or voiceless as intended? (柿 / 鍵)
What it does not measure
- Pitch accent or intonation
- Overall fluency or your Japanese level
- Sounds outside each prompt's target
Your recordings
Words are scored on your device. A sentence that can't be judged there may be sent once to our server for an AI second check; it is not stored.
